| Cano Officially Rejects Joan Guzman, Who Eyes Khabib
|
|
By Reynaldo Sanchez Dominican junior welterweight contender Joan Guzman (33-0, 20KOs), the current mandatory challenger to the "regular" World Boxing Association (WBA) title, has no idea who he'll face for the title recently vacated by Marcos Maidana. Last week the WBA ordered Guzman to face Pablo Cesar Cano of Mexico for the vacant belt, but the boxer has rejected the opportunity. As previously reported on BoxingScene.com a few weeks ago, Cano will face WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi on October 20th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. According to Guzman's promoter, Henry Rivalta of Acquinity Sports, Golden Boy Promotions were willing to match Cano against his fighter - but Cano's management had little to no interest in the fight. One of the possible opponents that Rivalta plans to approach is IBO champion Khabib Allakhverdiev (17-0, 8KOs) of Russia. "We will begin negotiations with the people of Allakhverdiev very soon and we hope to reach an agreement quickly," he said to BoxingScene.com.
I wouldn't of taken the fight either if I was in his shoes. Big risk against a guy that can't make weight most of the damn time.

The best I can say is, Cano knows his limitations. Guzman is a hard nut to crack and Cano "thinks" Paulie will be easier. It's really not that simple. Guzman can do it with one punch, but Paulie will slap you for eleven rounds and run you to death. I think one punch is better.[/QU... |

Golden Balls would match anyone with anyone, regardless. They've ruined quite a few promising prospects that way. Fortunately Cano's manager stepped in. He has a much easier title fight against Malignaggi, at least he won't get hurt. common-sense. |
