A few days ago, BoxingScene.com reported that Mexican welterweight Pablo Cesar Cano (29-4-1, 21KOs) was a leading candidate to face Lucas 'Machine' Matthysse as part of the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's defense of the WBC middleweight world title against British superstar Amir 'King' Khan. The event is happening n May 7th at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) is coming off a knockout loss in his junior WBC welterweight title bout with unbeaten Viktor Postol last October. Matthysse was stopped in the ninth round. He is now looking to switch weight divisions by moving up to the welterweight limit of 147-pounds.

Cano last fought in December in Mexico, where he won a ten round unanimous decision over Silverio Ortiz (who went the distance last week with Frankie Gomez).

The Mexican contender has confirmed that there are ongoing discussions and he hopes the fight is finalized. He sees Matthysse as the perfect opportunity to open a wide path to a world title shot or another big opportunity.

"We're waiting to see what happens, but we are ready. It is a good opportunity for me and Matthysse to approach a new title shot. Last year we did three fights and the three of them went well. Now I want to return to the big leagues and what better way than [a fight with] Matthysse," Cano told Univision.

"Matthysse is tough, but so am I. This is my big chance to enter the big leagues, so we have to get it right. This is my big door and I will not allow this opportunity to go to waste. It's a tough fight for both of us. We can both punch, have stamina, but I have the necessary experience and I must utilize it to get the win."
