Eddy Reynoso, trainer of Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs), does not rule out the possibility of facing WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12KOs) on Mexican soil.
Canelo returns on on September 17th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas - when he faces Saunders' stablemate Liam Smith for the WBO junior middleweight world title. Canelo has fought his last five bouts at 155-pounds, and briefly held the WBC middleweight crown before vacating the belt to drop back to 154.
If all goes well with Smith, Canelo has a tentative return on December 10th
Canelo wants to build his path to the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds. There is a verbal deal in place to for a September 2017 showdown with WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) in September of 2017. Golovkin defends his belts on September 10th against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook at the O2 Arena in London.
After the fight with Smith, Reynoso will sit down with their promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, to discuss the possibility of facing Saunders in Mexico.
"Everything is possible. There is sand and beautiful stadiums in Mexico. There is support and sponsorships that make us think that it is not a crazy idea. We do not know if I can be happen in 2016, and everything depends on the outcome of the fight against Smith. I think that we'll talk with Oscar de la Hoya and see if we can do it," said Reynoso to ESPN Deportes.
Saunders had mentioned a return date of September 17, possible on Canelo-Smith card, but nothing has been made official by either camp.
