Canelo vs. Golovkin Rematch Deal is "Getting Very Close"

By Steve Kim

So does the winner of the upcoming bout between WBO middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders, and David Lemieux, become a fall back option for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) - if the rematch with Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) is not successfully negotiated for next May?

This coming Saturday night in Canada, Saunders and Lemieux will collide in the ring. Golden Boy Promotiosn handles both Canelo and Lemieux.

Both Lemieux and Saunders have made it clear that Canelo would be their next target.

Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy says that is not the case - and the rematch with Golovkin is their top priority for the Cinco De Mayo date of May 5th.

"We're concentrating on making the rematch. We're very, very close on getting that done. It's just details we're working out and we're going back-and-forth and I think it's going to get done," Gomez told

"Our total focus - we're not thinking of anything else - what we want to do is the rematch. That's what we want."

As for when this could be announced, Gomez told - "If we can get it done some time this week, we can announce it this week. But we're very, very close. We're concentrated 100-percent on getting all the details done."

Back on September 16th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a disputed draw in an event that did very well financially, procuring well over a million pay-per-view buys and the third highest live gate in boxing history.

With the draw, Golovkin retained his WBA, WBC, IBO, IBF middleweight belts. In the aftermath, the WBC made Canelo the mandatory challenger to Golovkin's belt. It should be noted that Canelo is also the top rated contender under the WBO, which has the Mexican star in line for a mandatory crack at the Saunders-Lemieux winner.
