Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is going to make a big financial play to secure Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Canelo (48-1-1, 34KOs) drew over 50,000 fans to the venue last Saturday night, when he knocked out Liam Smith in nine rounds to capture the WBO junior middleweight championship.
Golovkin, who last saw action two weeks ago with a fifth round stoppage of Kell Brook, has been able to sell a lot of tickets in New York, Los Angeles, Monte Carlo and London.
The promoters behind both fighters are negotiating the terms for September 2017. Canelo was going to fight for a third time this year on December 10th, but those plans are now out the window after the Mexican superstar suffered a hand injury in the Smith victory and won't be able to fight again until 2017. Because of Canelo's injury, Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) may now take over that December date.
Last year, Jones offered $25 million to secure the mega-fight between Mayweather-Pacquiao, but he was ultimately outbid by the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“We’re gonna be in the hunt,” Jones told the Boston Herald. “If [Alvarez-Golovkin] still has the appeal, if they keep winning, and the fight still has all the things that you want … we will be very aggressive in getting the fight.”
Jones does warn that both sides should not delay that match for too long.
“There’s something magical when the time feels right, when it’s in the cross-hairs,” Jones said. "You better pull the trigger, because things have a way of getting out of kilter and never coming to bear and those things can be everything from God’s will to economic conditions to fickleness. That’s not just in boxing. Wait around until it feels a little better and you may never get a chance to hit that caboose again. You better grab that damn thing.”
