Eric Gomez, the President of Golden Boy Promotions, is not ruling out the possibility of a Mexican mega-fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32KOs) returned to the ring this past Saturday night in Mexico and won a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over German contender Dominik Britsch.

Canelo (48-1-1, 34KOs) was back in the ring in September, when he captured the WBO junior middleweight title with a knockout of unbeaten Liam Smith of the UK.

For this past weekend's fight, Chavez weighed in at 167.8-pounds - below the super middleweight limit and below the contracted weight of 169.

Gomez, who promotes Canelo, says a fight with Chavez will depend on the weight more than anything else.

Chavez wants to do the fight and claims that he's capable of getting down to a catch-weight of 164-pounds. Canelo is plotting a move to the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds.

The first fight for Canelo could take place on February 11th, as he aims to fight three times in 2017. There are other opponents being considered for Canelo, says Gomez, including former champion David Lemieux and current WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

"[Canelo-Chavez] is a fight that interests a lot of people. We will see what happens. To us it sounds like a very good fight for the fans. But more than anything, all of Mexico is interested in the fight," Gomez said to ESPN Deportes.

"We will see, the problem is the weight, but there are also two or three other opponents being considering... Billy Joe Saunders, David Lemieux."

Besides a catch-weight of 164, Gomez would like to have a rehydration clause for the morning of the fight - to prevent Chavez Jr. from getting too big by the time they step in the ring.

"Let's see. We would have to figure out what weight [it should happen at] and talk with Saul... he would have to agree [on the weight] because it is going up by 10 or 11 pounds. More than anything he and his team would have to see if there is a weight limit needed for the following day."

"Canelo wants to fight three times in 2017. We'll talk later this week. He needs one more session of therapy on his hand. We are going to talk Thursday or Friday to see how it feels. We want him to be one hundred percent before the fight, and we'll see if he feels good enough to return on the second Saturday of February."
