After his third round knockout of James Kirkland in Houston, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is looking to return on September 12th, which falls on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
WBO/WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., who also has the WBC/WBA titles at junior middleweight, is also planning to return on September 12.
Mayweather and Canelo had a standoff earlier this year for the Cinco De Mayo date of May 2nd. Mayweather was easily able to claim 5/2 when he finalized a deal to face Manny Pacquiao.
Canelo fought Mayweather in 2013, at a catch-weight of 152-pounds, and lost a twelve round majority decision.
With both of them targeting the same date, would Canelo like to fight Floyd again?
"He still has one more fight ahead. Yes, I’d like to fight him again. It would be a great, great fight. [Marcos] Maidana had his rematch, I think I deserve it, too. I’m a stronger fighter now. I learned a lot from the last time we faced each other and I know that maybe because of that he doesn’t want to bump with me again. Hopefully he does. September would be a great time for that," Canelo said to La Voz.
Another possible opponent for Canelo is WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who defends his title against Daniel Geale on June 6th.
"I’ve repeatedly stated this: I want to fight the best, either Cotto or Mayweather. I don’t fear anybody and we’re not to give advantages to anyone. We won’t change weight (division) only to accommodate the needs of any potential challenger. The important thing is to regain the world championship belt and give the public the fights they deserve. That’s why we filled the Minute Maid with so many people, because we gave them what they wanted to see," Canelo said.
