Edison "Eddy" Reynoso, the manager of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs), is hoping to finalize his fighter's opponent in no more than two weeks time.
"No later than 15 days because we have everything set to do a training camp. We can not wait until the last minute. In order to do the best job [in camp], it must be done in accordance with the opponent," Reynoso said.
He admits that if they fail to reach an agreement for a potential opponent on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Canelo is ready and able to fight in the month of March. One of their main targets for May is WBA "regular" champion Austin Trout. A meeting with Golden Boy Promotions is scheduled to take place to finalize the opponent.
"Anything can happen. Mayweather says that he will fight with Robert Guerrero, Austin Trout is having legal problems in the United States. We are ready, with the mind set of going in May. If not, Canelo can fight in March, there is time," Reynoso said.
"Next week we are going to Los Angeles to talk to the people from Golden Boy to know where we stand. We are going to fight on May 4 unless the opponent is not what we expected for Canelo. Austin Trout is a world champion with prestige, and he's coming off a win over Miguel Cotto - and we think that these are the kind of fighters [Canelo should face] because we are at that level. We can not turn back, this year we are going against the highest level of fighters."
