Kameda Retains With KO: Falcao, Quigley, Sosa Win

By Rick Reeno

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Olympic medal winner Yamaguchi Falcao (2-0, 1KO) stopped Jesus Cruz (1-2-1) after three rounds of middleweight action. Cruz, at the advice of his corner, did not come out for the fourth round.

Making his American debut, WBO bantamweight champion Tomoki Kameda (30-0, 19KOs) retained his title in style with a picture-perfect one punch body shot knockout of Pungluang Sor Singyu (46-3, 31KOs) in the seventh round. The Thai fighter had never been stopped in the past. Kameda started slow and took a few rounds to figure out the durable Thai fighter. During the seventh a hard left hook to the body put the challenger down for the count.

Olympian Jason Quigley (1-0, 1KO) made his pro debut in the middleweight ranks with a first round stoppage over the much smaller Howard Reece (2-7, 1KO).

Previously undefeated super bantamweight contender Yoandris Salinas (20-1-2, 13KOs), who fought Scott Quigg to a draw, suffered the first loss of his career with a shocking upset to Enrique Quevedo (16-7-1, 10KOs). Salinas started well but soon he was getting beat up, bloodied, and went down three times before the referee waved things off in the fifth round.

In the opening fight of the show, undefeated junior welterweight prospect John Karl Sosa (12-0, 6KOs) of Puerto Rico had a tougher time than he would have liked in a six round split decision victory over a game Luis Bello (5-1, 2KOs) of Mexico. The scores were 59-55 for Sosa, 59-55 for Bello, 59-55 for Sosa.

Kameda looks really sharp! Multiple fast jabs, wicked body puncher. Just needs to move a little less.
