Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is eager to get in the ring with Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin - and promises to take part in that match in the near future.
Canelo was ordered earlier this year to face Golovkin in a mandatory showdown. The World Boxing Council had issued that ordered to Canelo, who at the time held the WBC middleweight crown.
Negotiations took a turn when Canelo (47-1-1, 33KOs) vacated the title and the sanctioning body handed the title over to Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
The two sides made a verbal agreement to face each other next September. Canelo says the matchup will happen and rejects any claims of avoiding the fight.
"That fight has to happen. I want it to happen. That fight is going to happen sooner than later. It's going to eventually happen, but it's going to happen," Canelo told BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor.
Canelo raised eyebrows when he announced his plan to return to the junior middleweight division division. He challenges WBO world champion Liam Smith on September 17th at the AT&T Stadium in Texas. Golovkin will defend the IBO/WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight titles a week earlier against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook.
Canelo indicates that he intends to move up the middleweight division in the near future. There are rumors that he's going to return once again in December, and challenge the WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders - the only major title at the weight not held by Golovkin.
"Not too long. Once my body tells me that I need to move up, I will then move up. But right now I feel good and time will tell when I have to move up," Canelo said.
