Canelo Discusses Trout Unification, Facing Cotto on PPV

By Miguel Rivera

WBC 154-pound champion Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs) says there is no other fighter on his mind besides WBA champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14KOs). They will put their titles on the line on April 20th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

"I'm highly motivated. He is a great fighter, and brought even more value to himself with the victory that he earned over [Miguel] Cotto in New York, but these are the type of opponents that I want. To be great, you have to fight with the best. I think Trout is the most dangerous opponent [of my career] because he is young and he has never lost a fight. He's a southpaw but that doesn't worry me because I have already fought with left-handers and I've been able to beat them," Canelo said.

Trout previously defeated Canelo's older brother, Rigoberto Alvarez. Canelo doesn't exactly know if that factor adds a certain level of revenge in the match.

"I always climb into the ring to win, and if that is an additional motivation or not, we'll see. What I want is to win and still be champion," Canelo said. "Trout is a good boxer, he has the ability to fight over twelve rounds, as he showed in his win over Cotto."

If Canelo defeats Trout, the Mexican star expects to headline his first pay-per-view on September 14th, and Cotto is a possible opponent.

"I'm excited to go on pay-per-view to find out how much I'm supported by the people, and what that kind of impact does to a fighter. And facing Cotto is also a great challenge, but for now I'll leave all of that alone. The single front of concentration that we have at the moment is Trout," Canelo said.

I'll say Canelo will overpower Trout eventually and go for a late TKO. The level of relentless that Canelo brings to the fight is unlike anything we see very often in boxing. This will be an excellent, competitive fight though.…
