Floyd Mayweather Jr. can’t understand why the trainer who got a lot of credit for Miguel Cotto’s comeback hasn’t been blamed for his work in Cotto’s corner Saturday night. Mayweather – who along with his father/trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr., has been a frequent critic of famed trainer Freddie Roach – ripped Roach during an interview with fighthype.com for failing to give Cotto the proper advice against Canelo Alvarez in their middleweight title fight at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Mexico’s Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) won their 12-round bout by unanimous decision, though Puerto Rico’s Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) seemingly deserved more credit for his competitive performance than the three judges gave him (119-109, 118-110, 117-111).
Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33KOs) disagrees with the outcome of Saturday's fight at the at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Cotto lost a very twelve round unanimous decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who picked up the WBC middleweight title with the victory. After twelve rounds, the scores were announced as 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110. Many in the press felt the scoring was too wide in Canelo's favor.
The only boxer to beat both Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto was among those that thought the official scores of their middleweight title fight Saturday night at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas were way too wide. Floyd Mayweather Jr. called the scores “f***ing ridiculous” during an interview with fighthype.com that was posted Monday.
Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada - Talks of a Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin unification fight began almost immediately after Canelo's unanimous decision victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday night. Earlier this year the WBC allowed Cotto to face Alvarez under the condition that the winner face the WBA/IBF/IBO/WBC interim-champion in their next fight. After winning the green strap, Canelo said that he wasn't afraid of facing Golovkin or any fighter for that matter.
It’s not going to go down with the best of the Mexico-Puerto Rico showdowns but Saturday night we got an interesting fight with two really good rounds (the 8th and the 12th). We also got the end of the farce that was Miguel Cotto: Middleweight. Will we now get an even more absurd farce from Canelo Alvarez? One thing was for certain on Saturday night. Whatever he weighed for the fight, Alvarez was clearly the middleweight in the ring. There were no day of weights announced, but he had to be in-ring somewhere in the neighborhood of what Gennady Golovkin was for his last outing.
Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez is expecting Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33KOs) to return to the middleweight division. Cotto, who held world titles at junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight, moved up to middleweight last June and stopped Sergio Martinez to capture the WBC championship.
LAS VEGAS - In one of the most anticipated fights of the year, Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) and Canelo Álvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) thrilled fans from start to finish with high-intensity action just as promised, but it was Canelo that persevered and was crowned the new WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion with a unanimous decision win after 12-rounds.
by David P. Greisman - The fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez would have been a significant event just for what it represented, never mind for its ramifications. But the possibility of what could come next only added to the allure of what was to come first. There was hope that the winner of Cotto vs. Alvarez would go on to face Gennady Golovkin. And fortunately there was more than just that hope. There also was a mandate. The mandate went beyond the sentiment of boxing fans. It came from the sanctioning body that bestowed the world title Cotto held and for which Alvarez was vying. The mandate said that Cotto had postponed the prospect of facing Golovkin for long enough. He’d pushed it off and was willing to pay for the privilege, an investment that let him keep the World Boxing Council belt and set up the fight with Alvarez. The WBC obliged. If Golovkin was willing to take the money to wait, then the WBC could get a fight it wanted and collect six figures in fees from the fighters involved, then potentially collect even more were the winner to go on to face “GGG.”
