Caballero, Uchiyama May Collide at Some Point in 2012

By Jhonny Gonzalez

This past Saturday in Yokohama, Japan, a possible future fight may have been created between two champions. In the co-feature, Panama's Celestino "Pelenchín" Caballero (36-4, 23 KOs) retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight crown with a twelve round decsion over Japan's Satoshi Hosono (21-2, 15KOs). In the main event, WBA super featherweight champion Takashi Uchiyama (19-0, 16KOs) stopped Mexican veteran Jorge Solis in the eleventh round with a very impressive knockout.

Prior to the doubleheader, Caballero discussed his interest in moving up to the super featherweight division to challenge Uchiyama. After their doubleheader, Caballero was still very interested in moving up to face the Japanese champion and the Panamanian's team very pleased with the performance. Caballero's exposure in Japan has created value and the televised appearance on a big year-end promoter will help push a possible fight.

A potential fight is not going to happen until much further in the year, if the two sides initiate serious discussions. As BoxingScene.com previously reported, undefeated Costa Rican boxer Bryan 'Tiquito' Vasquez (28-0, 14KOs) will likely get his shot at Uchiyama (18-0, 15KOs) in the month of May in Japan. Vasquez won a WBA eliminator over Nicaraguan Santos Benavides on November 3rd.

Uchiyama seems to be legit and Caballero should provide a good test..
