Joel Colon catches up with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns to discuss his upcoming mandatory defense against Jose Gonzalez.

Ricky Burns has entered "crabbit" territory as he awaits Friday's weigh-in ahead of his WBO world lightweight title fight against Puerto Rican Jose Gonzalez at the Emirates Arena the following evening. The 30-year-old champion from Coatbridge, who has not fought since beating Englishman Kevin Mitchell in September last year, is in the final stages of a typically rigorous training regime. At the head-to-head press conference at the Glasgow venue today, Burns used the old-fashioned Scottish word for agitated to describe his emotions. "It is always the couple of days before the fight which is the worst," he said. "I think every boxer will tell you the same because you need to start cutting down on what you are eating. "You start getting crabbit, you just want to get the weigh-in over and once that is over you can concentrate fully on the fight. "So I am playing the waiting game now. I have been training for so long. I just want to get out there and put on a show for the fans and I am really looking forward to it." Burns posed nose-to-nose with his 29-year-old mandatory challenger, who arrived in Scotland with 17 knockouts from an unblemished 22-fight record.

Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez, the #1 WBO lightweight ranked, had a media day with the Scotland press for his fight against the WBO champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KOs), this Saturday, May 11, at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, in a Matchroom Boxing presentation. Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KOs) trained in front of the media at the Morrison’s Gym in Glasgow. The Puerto Rican, also, signed autographs and took photos with fans in the gym. Tomorrow, at 12:00 m. will be the final press conference at the Emirates Arena. On Friday, May 10, will be the official weigh in at the St Enoch Centre, open to the public.

Puerto Rican Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez trained today in Glasgow, Scotland, for his fight against the World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KOs), scheduled for this Saturday, May 11, at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, in a Matchroom Boxing presentation. Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KOs), the #1 WBO ranked and WBO Latino champion in the lightweight division, had a hard training session today with his team led by trainer Roberto Nevarez, manager Andres Ortiz and also trainer Jose Cintron at the Morrison’s Gym.

Ricky Burns insists he will not let his hopes of future fights in the United States put him off track as he prepares to square up to Jose Gonzalez. The WBO world lightweight champion will welcome the Puerto Rican to Scotland next week for their May 11 bout at Glasgow's 10,000-capacity Emirates Arena - his first since switching to Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport promotions company. But the 30-year-old from Coatbridge has been tipped for potential big-money meetings with WBC champion Adrien Broner or Miguel Vazquez, holder of the IBF title, should he retain his strap for a third time by beating Gonzalez. Vegas has also been suggested as a potential venue for the unification superfights but Burns is adamant that he can't afford to take his eye off his next opponent given the mandatory challenger's 17 knock-outs from an unblemished 22-fight record. "There is talk of unification fights and I know Eddie is keen to build my profile back up in Scotland and bring the big names over to Glasgow," said Burns. "But I need to win on May 11 to keep those alive. I always say it's one fight at a time. I never look beyond anyone. Gonzalez has got my full attention for now." He added: "I can't look past Gonzalez. It's going to be a tough fight. Although we can't get much footage of the boy, there is clips on YouTube of him knocking boys out.

Undefeated mandatory challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17KOs) left Puerto Rico earlier today, as he heads to Glasgow for next Saturday's fight with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10KOs) at the Emirates Arena.

Ricky Burns admits the only footage of Jose Gonzalez he can find is of his WBO lightweight challenger knocking opponents out. But the Scot is not overly concerned about his opponent's impressive knockout rate of 17 from 22 wins. Burns faced another unbeaten Puerto Rican in his first world title fight in the form of Roman Martinez and recovered from a first-round knockdown to win convincingly on points. And the Coatbridge fighter, who defends his belt at Glasgow's Emirates Arena on May 11, believes his own improving punching power can act as a deterrent. "We have been struggling to get any footage of his fights, the only things we can find on YouTube is him knocking boys out," Burns said.

Ricky Burns will perform a public workout at the St. Enoch Centre in Glasgow at midday on Thursday May 2 ahead of his WBO lightweight title defence against Jose Gonzalez at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on May 11 live on Sky Sports in Betfair’s ‘Fighting Pride of Scotland’. Burns clashes with the Puerto Rican challenger in his third defence of the belt, returning to the ring for the first time since his superb fourth round stoppage win over Kevin Mitchell in September at the SECC in Glasgow.

Jose Gonzalez has warned Ricky Burns he’s willing to go to the trenches to rip the Scotsman’s WBO lightweight title from him in Betfair’s ‘Fighting Pride of Scotland’ show on May 11 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports. The Puerto Rican travels to Scotland confident of upsetting the Coatbridge star, and despite a formidable KO record of 17 from 22 fights, the unbeaten mandatory challenger says he’s prepared to go the distance to rip the title from Burns’ hands.
