Burns' Trainer: Crawford Won't Be in His Comfort Zone

Trainer Billy Nelson is tipping his fighter, WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11KOs), to used his experience and superior skill to overcome Terence Crawford (22-0, 16KOs) on March 1 at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. Nelson expects both of the fighters to have a very tough time in the contest, but views Crawford's lack of experience against world class opposition as being the determining factor against the undefeated challenger.

Burns hasn't fought since defending his belt in a controversial draw against Raymundo Beltran back in September and despite favouring a rematch with the Mexican, the WBO ordered him to face unbeaten American Terence Crawford, his mandatory challenger, which will take place in Glasgow on Saturday, March 1. "It's going to be a very difficult fight for me; nobody knows that more than me. Technically he's very, very slick and very good. Obviously 16 knockouts from 22 fight means he can punch a bit as well," said Burns of his next opponent.

Their fight ended as a split draw in a bout that many observers felt should’ve ended with Beltran’s hands raised in the air. He won’t be getting an immediate rematch, though. Burns, in his first bout back since suffering a broken jaw against Beltran, will face off against his mandatory challenger, Terence Crawford. Ricky Burns has shrugged off concerns about his future in boxing as he prepares to defend his WBO lightweight title against Terence Crawford at Glasgow's SECC on March 1. The Coatbridge champion, 30, returns to the ring for the first time since breaking his jaw in the controversial draw against Ray Beltran last September which allowed him to keep his belt. Such was the damage done to the popular Scot that when promoter Eddie Hearn left hospital afterwards he was "sure that was it for Ricky Burns," with the fighter admitting he was no more assured.
