Bill Emes catches up with WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi to discuss the fight with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner and the verbal confrontation with Keith Thurman.

Top welterweight Keith "One Time' Thurman (20-0, 18KOs) told BoxingScene.com that he was not surprised with the recent news that WBA champion Paulie Malignaggi had agreed to face Adrien Broner on June 22 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Broner, the WBC's champion at 135-pounds, would move up by two divisions to face Malignaggi. In the opinion of Thurman, the welterweight champions out there are not looking to fight true welterweight contenders and would rather fight smaller guys moving up.

by David P. Greisman - Let’s get two things out of the way. This is not Shane Mosley moving from lightweight to welterweight and later going on to meet and defeat Oscar De La Hoya. Nor is this Floyd Mayweather moving up to the next weight class after being the champion and facing some of the top names at 130 at 135. That doesn’t take away from the intrigue. Adrien Broner will likely be moving up two divisions to challenge titleholder Paulie Malignaggi in a bout that already has boxing fans talking nearly as much as the two loquacious prizefighters have been doing. Let’s not overstate Broner’s move — at least, not yet. But let’s not understate it either. No, Broner’s reigns in the junior lightweight and lightweight divisions don’t approach those of Mayweather. Like Broner, Mayweather was precociously young when he captured his first world title, a 21-year-old stopping Genaro Hernandez to become the true champion at 130 pounds. Mayweather went on to defend his belt eight times, culminating with victories over Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernandez and Jesus Chavez. Then came lightweight, a controversial win over Jose Luis Castillo followed by a clearer one in their rematch, establishing Mayweather as the top guy at 135. And no, Malignaggi is not De La Hoya, whose only pro loss prior to the Mosley fight in 2000 was a highly debated defeat against Felix Trinidad. While Malignaggi is respected for his skills, heart and accomplishments, he does not stand out in a division that has titleholders in Mayweather, Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley, and also includes Juan Manuel Marquez and even Robert Guerrero, Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz. Mosley’s win over De La Hoya, meanwhile, established a new lineal champion in that division in the wake of Trinidad’s departure for 154, according to Cyber Boxing Zone.

As BoxingScene.com reported on Saturday night, WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22KOs) intends to move up by two weight divisions to challenge Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7KOs) for the WBA welterweight title in an HBO televised main event, likely on June 22 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Malignaggi, who has started training camp at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, CA, confirmed to BoxingScene that he’s confident Broner will suffer the first loss of his career if they step in the ring.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is expecting some fireworks in the ring, and during the pre-fight promotions, when Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) leaves the WBC lightweight title behind and jumps up by two weight divisions to challenge Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KOs) for the WBA welterweight crown in an HBO televised main event on June 22 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It appears a fight with Adrien "The Problem" Broner (26-0, 22KOs) and Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7KOs) will indeed be taking place in June at the welterweight limit as Broner himself broke the news earlier tonight. Broner was on hand at the Argenis Mendez-Juan Carlos Salgado fight card in Costa Mesa and was brought into the ring for the live crowd. When he took the mic he informed everyone in attendance that he would be making a move up to welterweight for his next fight and Malignaggi would be his opponent. BoxingScene.com spoke to Broner afterwards and he confirmed that his next bout would be at a different weight class.

While WBA Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi’s next fight still has not yet been determined, he is already back in the gym preparing for whatever is next. Malignaggi was getting in his workout at the Wild Card gym with trainer Eric Brown and spoke to BoxingScene about his thoughts on a possible clash with Broner which is currently being discussed for June. Malignaggi is very confident that if he indeed takes on Broner he will be Broner’s toughest test to date and will come out victorious. The always candid Malignaggi didn’t hold back as he said he feels Broner has been fed handpicked opponents and also went off on HBO for being the ones who are responsible for it.
