Adrien “The Problem” Broner and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer both made a big announcement Saturday night on both sides of the country regarding a deal being reached for Broner to jump up two weight classes and fight WBA Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi in New York at the Barclays Center on June 22nd.
Broner wouldn’t be the first fighter to make a leap from Lightweight to Welterweight as Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao and most recently Robert Guerrero took similar roads in order to secure lucrative fights and opportunities.
When BoxingScene spoke to Adrien, he was asked if he would actually come into the fight at the Welterweight limit of 147.
“Who knows what weight I come in [at]. If I come in at 147, 140, 138. It don’t matter. [It’s] easy money” Broner would tell BoxingScene.
Previously I did an interview with Paulie Malignaggi who sounded off on various topics and took some shots at Broner. When Broner was made aware of some of the comments, he brushed them off
“You said he was talking reckless – well reckless is an accident that didn’t happen” quipped the Cincinnati native as it looks like we’ll have to wait for the press conference for the war of words to really begin.
Broner appeared open to the possibility of coming back down in weight after his fight with Malignaggi so his move to Welterweight isn’t exactly permanent.
In the meantime, Broner has been spending a lot of time out west in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and informs a permanent relocation to Las Vegas, NV might be in store.
Fun Bit: Here’s a video of a crazy shot Broner made while playing basketball.
