The legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. has revealed that his son, Omar Chavez (32-2-1, 22KOs), has been offered a fight on July 19 against former lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23KOs). Omar is willing to take the fight - but only if the fight takes place at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds. Omar says a catch-weight of 150 is being requested and that is too low for the boxer to make in a safe manner.
"They made me an offer for the fight, but they want 150 pounds and I'm not going to lose [that much weight] and come into the fight with nothing. It is a fight that interests us, yes, but at super welterweight - because going that far below the weight will kill me," Omar said.
"It's not really a fight that I had in mind, but we are ready for good opportunities and this is one of them. The problem is the weight. They want me to come down and I can not lose that much. Brandon Rios is a good fighter, he likes to come forward, he always makes good fights. I think our styles would go well together, but I think [the fight] is unlikely, because he wants me to come down [in weight] and I'm not going to go down. If they accept the fight at 154 pounds, we are ready."Tags: Brandon Rios , Omar Chavez
