Brandon Rios: This Mexican is Going To Kick Abril's Ass

By Chris Robinson

Brandon Rios has seen his patience tested over the past month. From watching potential rival Yuriorkis Gamboa pull out of their scheduled April 14th fight to dealing with a barrage of insults from replacement opponent Richard Abril, Rios is simply chomping at the bit to get his hands on somebody come Saturday night when he fights inside of the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A former champion at 135 pounds, Rios has a chance to get the WBA title back that he lost on the scales this past December prior to his bout with Manchester's John Murray. And while a fight with Gamboa would have showcased Rios’ skills under a different type of spotlight, Abril, the WBA interim champion, has surely made things as lively as possible following his fellow Cuban’s withdrawal from the contest.

At Wednesday’s final press conference, Abril, who has twice gotten into slight physical altercations with Rios, continued his degrading ways, claiming that his foe was only ‘50% Mexican’ because of how disrespectful he comes across. Rios simply took the barbs with a grain of salt, as he is over the pre-fight showmanship at this point and simply ready to get to work.

I caught up with Rios prior to a recent training session at the Top Rank Gym and got his gauge on several subjects, including Abril’s remarks, why Gamboa is deserving of the criticism he has gotten, why he was able to lose weight much easier this time in camp, his thoughts on a possible move to 140 pounds, and much more…

This is what Rios had to share…

Not paying any attention to the insults of Richard Abril…

“I’m just ready to go in there and do what I do. I came to put on a show. This f***er says he’s going to break my jaw, and he’s going to shut my mouth up, for him to do that, he’s going to have to fight me. He can’t do that running and he’s going to be running all night, so Richard Abril, it is what it is. He can say what he wants to say. He’s just retarded. I made him say stupid sh*t because he’s stupid.”

Whether Abril is talking himself into a fight he can’t win…
“That’s what he’s doing. He’s trying to talk himself into the fight. He’s just trying to make himself believe he can do it, but he knows deep down inside he’s scared. There’s a little girl screaming deep down inside, that’s why.”

Abril’s comments that Rios is only 50% Mexican…
“I don’t know. I guess he’s referring that real Mexicans, they don’t talk sh*t, they prove it in the ring. I don’t give a f***, a real Mexican or not, this Mexican talks sh*t. They’ve seen my Dad, he’s 100% Mexican, he’s straight Mexican to the fullest, born in Mexico and everything. He can say what he wants to say, April 14th, this Mexican is going to come out and kick his *ss.”

Why Yuriorkis Gamboa deserves to be criticized for pulling out of their scheduled fight…
“A lot of people criticize me all the time. But I don’t go and complain and talk about this. Take it like a man, he should have showed up like a man. He’s the one that was calling me out. All said and done, f*** him. Gamboa who? I already moved past that sh*t. I’m not ready to talk about that mother***er no more. I’m just looking for bigger and better things for myself.”

No immediate thoughts on whether he will move up to the junior welterweight class in his next fight….
“You know what? First off, we’re planning to fight April 14th with Richard Abril. That’s the main focus right now. We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. Because he’s unknown and some of those guys are dangerous. They don’t have nothing to lose. They want to try to prove something and we’re going to be ready for that. After April 14th you can ask me and I’d love to answer your question.”

What was going through his head last December when he came in overweight for his bout with John Murray at Madison Square Garden…
“When I fought in New York? F*** dude, the only thing that was going through my head was that I just couldn’t make 135 no more. It was just horrible. I couldn’t believe how I did it. I sacrificed myself for one week not eating nothing. And I looked like a Zombie, but all said and done, I just showed everybody that I’m a true warrior and I do love my job. I don’t just do it for a payday, I went out there and fought my best. I even tried to lose it and even the next day I weighed in again. We probably were the same size in the ring. It is what it is. I learned from it. We hired Cecilio, our nutritionist. Look at me, I’m still talking. I feel great.”

A difference in losing weight this camp under nutritionist Cecilio Flores…

“Before I wasn’t doing it healthy. I was eating and I would wait for the last week to lose all the weight. I was only one meal a day. This time I ate three meals a day and I feel great. I’m just doing it more healthy and I feel stronger. Not only that, but I ate breakfast this morning, I drunk a cup of coffee, and I feel great.”

The best camp…
“A lot of people will say ‘This is the best training camp’, but literally, honestly, this is my best training camp I’ve had so far. Just because of the fact that the weight and everything came off perfectly. I always have a good training camp. It’s just this time, it’s the weight, the dieting, and the way the weight is coming off.”

His sparring for April 14th….

“Oh, I love to spar. One time I did fifteen rounds with three different, fresh new guys. They were more tired than I was. That just shows you. Sparring to me, I could spar all day. I go into the gym and I ask Robert ‘Am I sparring today’ and he says ‘No, you’ve got to wait’. Then he goes ‘You can spar four rounds’ and I say ‘F*** that, I’m not a four-round fighter’. It’s stuff like that. I love to spar.”

With open arms…

“Everybody in the gym, we welcome them in with open arms. I respect everybody in the gym, what they do, because they respect me back. I love all my fighters, all my teammates in the gym; we’re like a big family. When Kelly Pavlik came in I opened my arms to him, I showed him love already and he gave it back. We do that to everybody. Even though they came to spar with us, we show them love and we appreciate them for all the help and being in our gym.”
