Brandon Rios Rips Danny Garcia, Eyes Manny Pacquiao

By Chris Robinson

Following his dramatic 7th round TKO victory over Mike Alvarado last month, former lightweight champion and current day junior welterweight contender Brandon Rios is back to light training at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, Calif.

One of the more colorful characters you will run across in the sport, Rios’ gym theatrics are often a sight to behold, as was the case earlier this week when I swung by the gym and caught a day of his training.

Prior to Rios' grueling victory over Alvarado, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum had mentioned that he would possibly be angling the bout’s winner on towards a fight with Manny Pacquiao in April, regardless of the outcome of the Filipino star’s fourth encounter with Juan Manuel Marquez on Dec. 8.

And while such a match is alluring to Rios, he also seemed to have another man on his mind during our conversation, that being WBA/WBC junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia.

Read below for some highlights from my conversation with Rios, including why he feels he can knock out Garcia, whether or not Pacquiao’s heart is still in the sport heading into the Marquez duel, and much more.

Ready for whatever…
“I feel good. I feel great. I’m ready for the next opponent. Training lightly right now. Nothing heavy, nothing fully at it. But I’m ready for whatever, whenever.”

Why he was confident heading into the Alvarado fight…
“Because, my last two fights, I really fought at 140. I was having trouble making the weight. Now I make the weight comfortably, it’s nothing. Now I can actually use my power and not fade out not be weak during the fight. I’m ready for the best out there at 140. I just want to show the world what I can do. All the haters and all the experts saying that I suck, I hope they keep saying I suck because I keep proving them mother*ckers wrong.”

Thoughts on junior welterweight champ Danny Garcia…
“I’ll knock him out. I know I can knock him out. Because, he’s saying that he’s a better boxer than me, what I’ve seen is that he just comes to fight. He’s like me. He hasn’t really been tested. He fought Erik Morales. Yeah, Erik Morales was a hell of a fighter, but he fought an old Erik Morales. He fought Amir Khan; no disrespect to Amir Khan, but he’s been knocked out. He don’t have a chin. He hasn’t really fought nobody that can take a punch and give a punch and I think I can do that.”

Garcia’s Feb. 9 clash with former champion Zab Judah…
“I hope Judah shuts him up. But you never know, because he’s fighting another old guy. Judah does have skills, but sometimes he fades out. After a couple rounds, he starts fading. I hope Judah knocks him out.”

Danny Garcia’s outspoken father Angel calling Rios out…
“I’ve already seen the video where he said if Danny Garcia fights me, I’ve got to take a drug test, because something about the Mexican meat. Why you gotta bring up Mexico and Puerto Rico? I’ll still knock your ass out. Take a blood test all you want. I’ll take a blood test. It don’t bother me.”

Envisioning the pre-fight lead up to a Garcia match…
“The press conference in that fight would be insane. I think one of us would end up hitting each other. It would be crazy. It would be an insane press conference, because his Dad talks a lot of sh*t. I talk a lot of sh*t. Danny doesn’t really talk; it would be mostly his Dad’s press conference and Rios’ press conference.”

How he’d react to the same Garcia left hook that dropped Amir Khan and Erik Morales…
“I’ll smile at him and just say ‘That’s all you got?’. I’ll smile. He knocked Amir Khan out with a no-looker. He threw the punch and just caught him.”

What he brings to the table that Garcia hasn’t seen…
“Balls, heart, and I’ll show everybody. I come to fight. I don’t come to f*** around. If I talk s**t and I back it up, it’s because I’m ready. I talk s**t and I back it up. I’m ready. I come to fight. I don’t come to hug, hold. Honestly I think; not I think, I know I can knock him out. I want what he has. That’s the WBC and the WBA. I want that s**t.”

Open to a match with Manny Pacquiao…
“If Bob Arum and Cameron Dunkin want me to fight Manny Pacquiao next, I’ll fight him. Go up to 147, win that fight, come back down to 140, clean out 140, and then go back to 147. It’s not like it’s going to be hard for me to make 147. As you can see, I make 140 pretty comfortably. 147 would be the same s**t. I’ll clean both divisions out, why not?”

Whether or not Pacquiao’s heart is still in boxing…
“Yeah, why not? If he’s still fighting, why not? That means his heart is still in the game. He’s got a tough test in front of him, that’s Marquez again. That’s going to be a great fight. We’ll be at that fight.”

Freddie Roach’s remarks that he would “kiss” Marquez’s *ss if he was a clean fighter, an obvious hint that he feel the Mexico City marvel may be cheating…
“I read that quote. I don’t know what’s going on. It’s just crazy. Whatever Marquez’s coach is doing to him, he’s doing a great job. He’s making Marquez look big and strong and fit at 147. I can’t say he’s taking drugs or anything, because I don’t know the guy personally; I don’t know none of the guys. I just know that he’s looking good."

No idea what’s going on…
“As well as Pacquiao, he’s been looking good in his body. When he fought the bigger guys. Pacquiao’s been looking great. Big, cut, ripped up; so I think Marquez looks the same way. I can’t judge none of them because I don’t know what’s going on and [Hernandez] is doing a good job too.”

Finding a way to beat Pacquiao…
“What’s it going to take to beat Manny Pacquiao? What I’ve been doing for the last, since I’ve been boxing, for eight years. Pressure, pressure, pressure. Fight, fight, fight. Keep coming, don’t stop. I’m the next Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. I’m the next one coming up and I’m just ready to be the best out there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Danny stops Rios in whatever round his dad calls it in.
Why not match Rios up with the ghetto warrior rap dancing broner. Now that is a fight. DeMarco was a disgrace to boxing and should be banned forever. Rios comes to fight.
Broner would carve him up.
