Boxeo Telemundo Returns 2/22; Full Schedule Announced

By Jake Donovan

A rare late start and early close are in store for the 2013 season of Telemundo’s ‘Boxeo Telemundo Ford’ boxing series. The network will still retain its traditional 12 dates over the course of the year, but in condensed format in regards to presentation.

Past seasons have traditionally offered monthly telecasts, beginning with a January show in Mexico and concluding in December somewhere in Florida, most commonly at the Civic Center in Kissimmee.

The upcoming season will be offered in six separate blocks of back-to-back Fridays, beginning with its season premiere on February 22 in Palm Bay, Florida. The show heads south of the border one week later, with its March 1 edition to air from a yet to-be-determined venue in Mexico City.

The March 1 show is one of three on the month, with March 22 and March 29 taking place from the Kissimmee Civic Center and Foro Polanco in Mexico City, respectively.

A three-month break follows before the series returns for back-to-back weekends in late June and then again in late July, with July 26 marking the last telecast of the summer. The series returns on September 27 in Mexico, which will host three of the final four episodes by the time the season wraps up on November 1.

Promoter All-Star Boxing is presently working on main events for the first four dates.

As of press time, featherweight Orlando Cruz is slated to appear on either of the first two shows in Florida. A recent tweet from the resurgent contender suggested he will headline the March 22 show, though there remains the possibility that his ring return will be bumped up to the season premiere.

Cruz has long served as a series favorite, though he made headlines for entirely different reasons late in 2012. The Puerto Rican - who served on his nation's Olympic boxing squad during the 2000 Summer Games - made his homosexual lifestyle public knowledge, making him the first known gay active boxer. The announcement was made in early October - three weeks before his landslide decision win over Jorge Pazos later in the month for his third straight win.

The full schedule for 2013 appears as follows:

February 22 - Palm Bay, FL
March 1 - (TBA) Mexico City, Mexico
March 22 - Civic Center Kissimmee, FL
March 29 - Foro Polanco Mexico City, Mexico
June 21 - Civic Center Kissimmee, FL
June 28 - Condesa Mexico City, Mexico
July 19  - (TBA) Florida
July 26 - Civic Center Kissimmee, FL
September 27 - Foro Polanco Mexico City, Mexico
October  4 - Condesa Mexico City, Mexico
October  25 - Civic Center Kissimmee, FL
November 1 - Foro Polanco Mexico City, Mexico

As has been the case in the past, all Boxeo Telemundo telecasts will air live at 11:35PM ET.

Cruz would b smart 2 do the Kissimmee show instead of the much smaller palm bay location...Kissimmee draws from a wider area, nice arena w/ a balcony...
