Lightweight contender Sharif Bogere (23-0) is finally getting the title shot that he has been waiting for. The Uganda native faces WBA interim-lightweight champion Richard Abril (17-3-1) on March 2. The fight will be televised by Showtime.
"I have been waiting for this moment. It is a real dream come true. I will be ready for the fight," Bogere told Boxingscene.com.
Bogere was in attendance for Abril's last fight, a controversial split decision loss to Brandon Rios. Bogere shares the sentiments of many observers who felt that Abril did enough to win the fight even though he came out on the short end of the stick on the scorecards.
"He beat Rios. I was there and I watched the fight. Abril is a slick fighter. He has good skills but I do too and its going to be a good night for me."
The Rios-Abril fight wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing fight and won't be in the running for any Fight of the Year awards. Abril used a lot of holding and grabbing tactics to nullify Rios' aggressive, straight forward style. Bogere doesn't feel that Abril will be able to successfully use that strategy against him.
"I think he was able to do that to Rios because of Brandon Rios' style," said Bogere who is a lot more of a mover and is quicker than Rios. "My style is different than Rios. I don't think he will be able to do that against me. I am not going to give him a chance to grab me like he did to Rios."
Bogere's nickname is "The Lion". He wears a lion outfit and is transported inside of a cage during his ring walk. His flashy ring entrance has gained him a lot of notoriety in Las Vegas where he lives and trains. He said that this is the fight he needs to make him a star and that he has something extra planned for his ring walk.
"After this fight the fans will know who Sharif "The Lion" Bogere is. We are going to bring the lion costume and the cage but we are going to spice it up with a new twist. Make sure you check out the fight," Bogere revealed.
