After Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) retained his WBC, IBO, WBA ‘Super’ and IBF World Middleweight Titles, he has been linked to a huge unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) in the summer.

The Kazakh has set his sights on the final remaining belt in the division, which is in the possession of WBO World Champion Saunders, who this week revealed he is open to the fight.

Saunders’ trainer Adam Booth spoke to iFL TV about Golovkin’s close unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs in New York, which ended his streak of 23 straight knockouts.

“I thought it was quite safe to say that Golovkin won it by a couple of points. The knockdown, and the amount of heavy jabs that Daniel allowed Golovkin to land, made a big difference in the fight for me,” argued the London-based coach.

“At the age of 34, you don’t know if Golovkin can rise in tempo when he’s fighting. Maybe next time he’ll be better because he’s actually had a bit of competition for once!”

Hatfield talent Saunders lifted the WBO strap in December 2015 after outpointing Andy Lee in Manchester and is keen to test himself against the division’s number one.

“My thoughts [on the fight] are still the same,” stated Booth. “Having had a competitive fight, it’s very easy to see how Triple G might raise his game and think ‘I’ve now got people who can test me’ and he goes up a level.

“But I also know how clever and quick and deceptive Billy Joe is. I only think about winning. If the fight gets made, we will look at how that fight gets won.”
