WBO interim super featherweight champion Miguel "El Alacrán" Berchelt (30-1 27 KOs) appears headed towards a December showdown against former title challenger Orlando Cruz.
He doesn't want to look too far ahead but he already has his eyes on bigger fights. He has a potential "super" fight on the horizon being that he is the mandatory challenger for full WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko who faces Nicolas Walters on November 26th at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
The fight is one of the top fights that can be made in the sport and Berchelt feels it is close to a 50-50 type of fight.
"Lomachenko is a great boxer and Walters is a big knockout artist who can also box. I believe it will be a real treat for all boxing fans," Walters said while also adding that Walters, who is the betting underdog, shouldn't be underestimated.
"You should never count out a valiant fighter, especially one that packs a powerful punch."
Berchelt believes that a victory over Cruz will help raise his profile in the Untied States and help him secure a fight against the winner or any other champion in the division.
He believes that is the first step in his young career to cementing his legacy as one of Mexico's greatest fighters.
"I want to fight the best out there and on the biggest stages. I will be back in the ring soon and I am training very hard to fulfill my promise.
"I want to be a great champion just like Julio César Chávez, Erik Morales, and Juan Manuel Márquez. I want to be a Mexican who is in big fights and most importantly one who knocks out his opponents and puts on spectacular performances in the ring. That makes the fans proud," Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.
