Beltran-Kim Undercard Results: Magdaleno, Verdejo Win

By Ryan Burton

A special edition of ESPN2 Thursday Night Fights kicks off a monster fight weekend in Las Vegas. Raymundo Beltran takes on Ji-Hoon Kim in a scheduled 12-round lightweight battle in the main event.

TELEVISED UNDERCARD

2012 Puerto Rican Olympian Felix Verdejo made his debut a successful one when he defeated Leonardo Chavez (1-1) via unanimous decision. The scores were 40-36 twice and 39-37.

Verdejo's speed and overall boxing ability were superior to the Mexican-American who displayed tremendous courage and heart as he absorbed many big shots.

Chavez landed some big shots of his own and may have a bright future ahead of him as well. Verdejo is definitely a prospect to keep our eye on and may be the next star from the boxing rich island of Puerto Rico.

Red hot prospect Jessie Magdaleno (13-0, 9KO) routed Jonathan Arellano (13-2-1, 3KO) in an exciting fight to open up ESPN2's special.

Scores were 80-70 (twice) and 80-69.

Magdaleno started out fast, dropping Arrellano in the second round. While both fighters have fast hands, Magdaleno's advantage in speed and power was evident early on in the fight.

Arrellano displayed a sturdy chin surviving a 6th round knockdown to make it to the final bell and landed several crisp shots of his own.

With the victory Magdaleno secured the NABO Youth title.  He is a favorite to win Prospect of the Year by many different media outlets.

OFF TV

In an upset, prospect Jose "El Gato" Roman (14-1-1) suffered his first loss as a pro as Robert Osiobe (14-5-4) took a surprise split decision in their eight-round bout. The scores were 74-77 and 76-75 twice for Osiobe who survived a late knock down to secure the victory.

In the evening's opening bout the "Russian Mexican" Evgeny Gradovich (15-0) defeated William Villanueva (10-5-1) via 7th round TKO. The time of the stoppage was 2:03. Gradovich dropped Villanueva twice before unloading a barrage of punches that forced referee Robert Byrd to waive the fight off.
