Promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, who co-promote WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with Top Rank, has given his two cents on the dueling events that are taking place on September 15th in Las Vegas.
Beltran's fighter will defend his title against Sergio Martinez at the Thomas & Mack Center. Chavez-Martinez will be carried by HBO pay-per-view.
Less than two miles away, at the MGM Grand, Golden Boy Promotions are scheduled to stage their own event. Headlining the show is WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Canelo's opponent will be finalized in the next few days and the event will either be carried by Showtime, Showtime pay-per-view or CBS.
According to Beltran, Golden Boy's refusal to back away from the September date is based on ego and not for the benefit of Mexican Independence Day.
"Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy, is not risking anything so it is not important for him. He is only looking to satisfy his own ego. The date of September 15th, it does not belong to Golden Boy or Top Rank or anyone else. The date is for a Mexican to face someone who interests the public," Beltran said.
"We are having the fight between Chavez and Martinez, and both of them are available. Canelo does not even have an opponent and they want to do it in the same city. [Golden Boy President] Oscar De La Hoya mentioned on Twitter that Golden Boy will do fights on September 15 for the next 50 years. What is that based on what? Who gave [them] authorization for that?"
"We are bringing a strong card on September 15th, it's going to be a disaster for them."
