Newly crowned WBC Silver middleweight titlist Avtandil Khurtsidze (27-2-2, 16 KOs) has another tough test ahead of him. WBC #5 ranked 160lber, who is coming off a close majority decision over Ghanaian Ozzie Duran in December, has been ordered by the World Boxing Council to take on rugged Italian contender and WBC #9 ranked Domenico Spada (34-4, 18 KOs) in his first defense.
The fight is tentatively set to take place in spring either in Italy or in Ukraine (Khurtsidze is promoted by Kiev-based Elite Boxing Promotions).
Spada is best known for two unsuccessful challenges to the WBC middleweight interim title against German champion Sebastian Zbik. He also lost a competitive decision to Brit Darren Barker for the European crown. Former IBO champion Khurtsidze enjoyed 4-0, 2 KOs, streak the last year. He is also ranked #6 by the IBF and #11 by the WBO.
