BoxingScene.com recently caught up with WBA junior middleweight champion Austin "No Doubt" Trout (24-0). The lanky southpaw had a successful 2011 campaign by going 3-0 in route to capturing his first world title. In this Boxingscene interview Trout talks about potentially facing his mandatory challenger Anthony Mundine, his future plans, and more.
BoxingScene.com: What is the latest with you Austin?
Austin Trout: I am just waiting to see what is going to happen. I am letting my promoter Greg Cohen do his job. I know he is working on a fight that looks real, real good. It is going to be a big fight.
BoxingScene.com: Is there a time table for when that fight make take place?
Austin Trout: Probably in April. It looks like April right now but nothing is set in stone.
BoxingScene.com: Can you reveal what opponents you are looking at for that fight?
Austin Trout: I can't really do that because you know how boxing is. The fights that I heard that might happen this morning could be dead already. They are just talks but they are for big fights. They are for fights on HBO or Showtime but right now now they are just talk.
BoxingScene.com: You had very successful 2011. You went to Mexico twice and won both fights. You picked up the WBA title and you also made your ShoBox debut towards the end of the year. Are you satisfied with the way your career has progressed?
Austin Trout: I am honestly happy. I still have a title. I still have my undefeated record intact. My career is progressing and I am happy with it.
BoxingScene.com: If I was to tell you that you could face the opponent of your choice in your next fight who would you choose?
Austin Trout: Like in a perfect world scenario?
BoxingScene.com: Exactly. Any fight you want.
Austin Trout: That would be Canelo (Alvarez) so I could get that coveted green belt (WBC). But you know I am torn between (Miguel) Cotto and Canelo because I have to fight Cotto to get the WBA "super" belt. That way they can stop calling my belt the "regular" belt but then again in order to get a super belt I have to be a unified champion so beating Canelo would legitimize my belt.
BoxingScene.com: Well getting back to the real world it appears that Shane Mosley is the front runner to be Alvarez's next opponent. What do you think about that fight?
Austin Trout: Well Cotto is busy fighting Mayweather. If Cotto wasn't fighting him I think it would be Canelo.
BoxingScene.com: Do you find it strange that they might pick Mosley since he has 2 losses and a draw in his last 3 fights?
Austin Trout: Well yeah it is strange. But it fits the profile for Canelo's opponents. He is a blown up welterweight and he is over the hill, so on and so forth.
BoxingScene.com: Maybe they are looking at it from the standpoint that Mosley still has a name and it will help sell some pay per views on Cinco de Mayo.
Austin Trout: I am surprised that would be put on TV. When I fight over the hill and blown up guys...actually I usually fight guys bigger than me but they never put my fights on TV like that (laughing).
BoxingScene.com: Speaking of potential fights, whatever happened to fighting Anthony Mundine? I remember hearing that you were going to fight him in Australia but now it looks like he is looking to come to the U.S. Is that fight still a possibility?
Austin Trout: Yes. He is my mandatory. The reason is we haven't fought yet is because last August he pulled out of a fight against me so that he could fight for an interm belt that would have made him my mandatory. So he pulled out of a fight against me to get into a position to be able to fight me (laughing). Now that he is in the position to fight me he isn't doing anything with it. And not only is he not doing anything with it but the WBA is like hey you (to me) are the mandatory for Cotto but you haven't fought your mandatory yet either so don't talk about Cotto until you figure what is up with your mandatory. So like two weeks ago we sent a letter stating that we are ready to fight our mandatory and we haven't heard anything yet. We want to hurry up and set up a fight asap.
Boxingscene; That leads me to my next question. Cotto has had his belt for a while now and he hasn't fought his mandatory since he won it. But with what you just said, you need to fight your mandatory before they force him to fight you, right?
Austin Trout: Yeah and I understand it. I guess it makes sense. Why am I going to cry that I am his mandatory when I have my own mandatory to deal with? So let me just deal with my mandatory and then we will see what they got to say.
BoxingScene.com: In the past you have expressed your desire to unify titles. There are guys out there that we don't see on TV all the time but have belts. Guys like Zaurbek Baysangurov from Russia who has the WBO belt and then there is also K9 Bundrage who has the IBF belt. Would you be interested in facing those guys?
Austin Trout: I want to get all of the belts. I am not just trying to get a couple. I am trying to get all of the belts before I move up to another weight class. I don't think anyone should feel that their job is done until they get all of the belts in their class. That way they are the best in that class. You know I have to do some research on this Russian. I can't pronounce his name but if he has a belt I want it. That goes for K9 too. I hear he is a free agent so it should be easier for my promoter to make a fight with him. It should be. Then there is Canelo and Cotto who have belts and that is it.
BoxingScene.com: Cotto has a belt now but do you think after May 5th that he will still have it? How do you see his fight against Floyd Mayweather playing out?
Austin Trout: Oh yeah. After May 5th he isn't going to have that belt. But hey I would love to fight Mayweather for that belt (laughing).
BoxingScene.com: Do you give Cotto any shot at winning that fight?
Austin Trout: You know I just don't see it. I really don't see what Cotto can do to beat Mayweather. I know what you have to do to beat Mayweather but I don't think Cotto can do it. He looked good against (Antonio) Margarito but Margarito is done you know. (Ricardo) Mayorga is done. (Yuri) Foreman is done. All of his last fights he has looked decent against shot fighters. Mayweather is far from shot. I don't know. He is a big underdog and I don't think he has much of a chance of winning that fight.
BoxingScene.com: Do you have a message for the fans in closing?
Austin Trout: I want them to keep watching me. I have some big things on the horizon. Thanks for the support.
