Arum Says No Approach on Ward, But Would Sign if Free

By Luis Sandoval

BoxingScene reported earlier this week that Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward was in the process of trying to break ties from current promoter Goosen Tutor after being with the promotional company since the start of his professional career.

The rumors around the boxing circuit were Ward was looking to break from Goossen in order to sign with Top Rank. BoxingScene caught up with Bob Arum who stated they have not been in any type of contact with Ward in regards to making him a Top Rank fighter.

“I don’t know anything about that. We certainly haven’t approached Ward. We don’t interfere with anybody’s contract. If he is out of his contract with Goossen, would we be interested? Of course. But hey, we don’t do that” Arum told BoxingScene.

Ward has been mentioning wanting a mega fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr who he feels would be the ideal fighter to give him a major pay per view event. As with many fighters who have wanted to fight a popular Top Rank fighter, Ward would most likely need to sign with Top Rank in order to make the fight happen. Guys like Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley have made similar moves in the past in order to secure a fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Arum also revealed if they were able to secure Ward and sign him to Top Rank, a fight with Chavez Jr would definitely be a fight they would want to make.

[QUOTE=MDPopescu;13489563]Ward IS a natural light heavyweight -- he said he would take a Froch fight for a big purse in the UK (as we all know). If not possible, Ward said he will move up. Ward is pennyless right now…

[QUOTE=The Weebler II;13489569]Iirc Ward's stance has been that he's not going to move up too early in his career and that he will only move up for the "right fight". I doubt Ward is penniless, he received $1.5m for Dawson…
