The last time that this writer can recall Top Rank and Golden Boy executives being involved in a media conference call at the same time was back in August 2011, when Yuriorkis Gamboa, then with Top Rank, fought Golden Boy featherweight Daniel Ponce De Leon.
They were asked about promoting together for the first time in awhile — the Cold War between them had already been going on.
“I hope it is the first of many match-ups which we can make,” said Richard Schaefer, then the CEO of Golden Boy, at the time. “Bob [Arum of Top Rank] and I have discussed some other fights, so we will see what happens. I think between our two stables are some interesting match-ups, and this one here being the first one. We have opened up our channels of communications and that’s a good thing.
Said Arum: “We have had meetings, but until the fights are made it is silly to talk about them.”
That was it. But now Schaefer has departed from Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya has asserted control of the company, and De La Hoya has made amends with Arum. Golden Boy won the purse bid to promote a June 21 bout between Top Rank’s Vasyl Lomachenko and Gary Russell Jr., who works with Golden Boy.
Once again, it is a featherweight bout that has the two promotional companies back on the same telephone call — one scheduled for this coming Tuesday.
Arum spoke about this to BoxingScene.com on June 6:
“Schaefer, when they won the purse bid, was like ‘Top Rank, Bob Arum, can’t be involved in the promotion. Maybe they can buy tickets to the fight.’ Well that’s stupid. That’s not the way it’s done. If a purse bid, the promoter for the side that doesn’t win the purse bid is accorded a full recognition, not necessarily in decision-making.
“Well Oscar has asked me to be on the conference call next week, and I will be. That’s the way it should be. It’s the normal type of procedure.”
