As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, UFC superstar Conor McGregor has promised to knock out five division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. - if the two of them finalize a deal to get in the ring.
Following months of posturing between the pair, UFC president Dana White - who had previously been dismissive of such a showdown - changed his stance on a potential bout and suggested it is inevitable due to the amount of money involved.
McGregor was ringside at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York for the professional boxing debut of his friend Michael Conlan and stoked his war of words with Mayweather.
He told reporters: "Watch me take over boxing, trust me on that. No one in this boxing game knows what's coming. Trust me on that. I'm going to step in there and shock the whole goddamn world. Trust me on that.
"Look me in the eyes, 28 years of age, confident as a motherf*****, long, rangy, dangerous with every hand. Trust me, I'm going to stop Floyd and you're all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words.
McGregor did not provide any information about a date for the potential fight, but said: "Don't worry about it. You'll hear about it. I'm out of here. I am boxing."
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Conlan and staged the event at MSG, still feels McGregor is making a big mistake. But, Arum admits he would match any of his fighters against McGregor - and Arum is so confident his fighter would win that he'd be willing to agree to 'winner takes all' terms.
“I’m grateful that Conor came over here, it certainly helped with the promotion,” said Arum. “But Conor McGregor should not think about fighting a world-class fighter until he fights [against another boxer on a lower level]. Let him fight the guy that Conlan just fought and see how he does."
"Sh*t yeah [I would promote a boxing match with McGregor]... the money involved. It's easy money. I would do Conor MGregor against any of my fighters and I would do winner takes all."
