Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is planning to raise his original offer to WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24KOs), hoping the Japanese champion will face Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18KOs) in March 2012. Donaire, the WBC/WBO champion at bantamweight, is moving up in weight in early 2012. Arum made an offer to Nishioka in October, when the boxer decisioned Rafael Marquez in Las Vegas, but the Japanese star expressed his desire to stay out of the ring until May.
Arum wants Donaire to fight at least four times in 2012, and hopes the lure of more money will entice Nishioka to return earlier than expected. Arum plans to call Nishioka's promoter Mr. Honda on Monday to dicuss the possibility of of securing Nishioka for March.
"I'm going to call Honda up on Monday and offer Nishioka a little extra money and see if we can make it in March. If not, we'll fight someone else in February," Arum said.
If a they can't reach a deal, another possible opponent is WBO champion Jorge Arce, but Arum would rather save Arce for a big event in June. In the month of June, a new arena is opening in the Philippines. The officials want Donaire to break the arena in by headlining a major event. Arum wants Arce to face him at the venue.
"I've been saving Arce for June, because the Filipinos want Nonito to open up the new arena in Manila and they want him to fight a Mexican, they want him to fight Arce. But if we can't do that, then we'll put him in with Arce in February, and then we'll do Nishioka in June," Arum said.
