Arum: Garcia-Gamboa in Serious Negotiations For 5/17

Text by Edward Chaykovsky, Interview by Chris Robinson

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum says there are serious negotiations that are ongoing to finalize a lightweight battle between Mikey Garcia and Olympic gold medal winner Yuriorkis Gamboa, for May 17th at The Forum in Los Angeles. Top Rank President Todd duBoef is working out the financial details with HBO and Gamboa's promoter, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. Gamboa was previously promoted by Top Rank, but his contract was bought out by 50 Cent in 2012.

"Todd is working on it with HBO and 50 Cent. Everybody is serious about doing that fight....May 17th being the initial fight and we open up The Forum in Los Angeles for boxing. A fighter like Gamboa is a threat to everyone, because he is extraordinarily talented. But that's what boxing is about. Where Gamboa's head is, even if I was with him, I couldn't tell you because I'm not a psychiatrist, and I'm not with him so I certainly can't tell you," Arum said.
I see Gamboa as a guy that needs real competitionfor him to be serious and perform like he's capable of. Garcia looks like a guy that'll have trouble dealing with adversity when stepping up in competition. This could end up…
No, you're not. Mikey is too fundamentally sound. Gamboa can be fast and flashy, but he's a ko waiting to happen.
I think this fight is tough to call. But I've been hearing "Gamboa is a KO waiting to happen"…
