Junior middleweight contender Willie Nelson (20-1-1, 12KOs) is just days away from his HBO debut against Luciano Cuello. The fight opens up an HBO tripleheader that is headlined by Gennady Golovkin's WBA/IBO middleweight title defense against Matthew Macklin.
The 6'3" Nelson joined us on this week's edition of BoxingScene Radio to talk about the fight and his future plans. He hopes that a win over Cuello will lead him to a fight against one of the big names in the talent laden junior middleweight division.
"I would like to fight the Lara's, the Cotto's, Alvarez. Any of the top contenders. I pretty much put my work in and beat everybody they put in front of me. I think I'm ready for the top guys and I want to show it in a fight against one of those guys," Nelson stated.
Nelson told us that he thinks Floyd Mayweather's experience and intelligence will be too much for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez when they meet in the ring on September 14th in Las Vegas. He also admitted that he was disappointed when the fight was announced because he wanted the chance to hand the Mexican superstar his first defeat.
"I didn't want the fight to happen because I wanted to give Canelo his first loss. I think that Floyd is just going to outclass him. His ring IQ is just so great," Nelson told BoxingScene Radio.
