Roman Gonzalez and Brian Viloria are both well within the WBC-required 7-day weight check ahead of their October 17 World flyweight title fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
As per terms of the WBC, fights sanctioned by the Mexico-based organization come with the condition of fighters weighing in 30-days and 7-days prior to their scheduled contest. Combatants cannot weigh more than 10% above the contracted limit 30 days out, and no more than 5% above limit seven days out.
Gonzalez and Viloria both had to weight 118 lbs. or less during Saturday's pre-fight check. Gonzalez came in at 115 lbs., while Viloria was a trim-and-ready 113 lbs., already one pound within fighting weight.
The bout serves as the chief support to the middleweight unification clash between unbeaten Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux. The pair of championship contests top an HBO Pay-Per-View event.
Gonzalez (43-0, 37KOs) attemps the third defense of the World flyweight crown he snatched from Akira Yaegashi in a knockout win last September. The unbeaten rising star from Nicaragua previoulsy held titles at strawweight and junior flyweight and - in the wake of the recent retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. - has gained near-universal recognition as the best fighter in the world, pound-for-pound.
The pounds have come off for the supremely talented champ, who was 123.6 lbs. at the 30-day limit. Because the WBC rounds up to the nearest whole number, Gonzalez' previous weight was considered within regulation, as he couldn't weigh any more than 124 lbs.
Viloria (36-4, 22KOs) looks to enjoy a third title reign, including a second run at flyweight. The 2000 U.S. Olympic boxer remains dangerous deep into his career, riding a four-fight win streak heading into what many view as his last chance at championship glory.
The 34-year old Hawaiian boxer of Filipino descent claimed titles at junior flyweght and flyweight, but with every big career win always seemed to come a loss that few saw coming. His most recent turned out to be a bigger fight in retrospect, dropping a 12-round split decision to Juan Francisco Estrada, who has designs on fighting the winner of this bout.
Estrada dropped a 12-round decision to then-junior flyweight champ Gonzalez in Nov. '12, five months before upsetting Viloria in their unified title fight in Macau, China.
Always in shape, Viloria has shed 3.6 lbs. in the three weeks following the 30-day weight check, where he was 116.6 lbs.
