Former three division world champion Félix 'Tito' Trinidad is worried that his countryman, WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs), will get overwhelmed by the speed of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs). The fight takes place on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"It will be a very good, important fight for both. It will be difficult for Miguel Cotto. It is a difficult fight because of the speed of Mayweather," Trinidad told Daniel Vargas.
"I think this fight will be good in the early rounds. If Cotto runs out of gas, if he's not in the best condition, it will become very tough for Cotto."
Trinidad advised Cotto to become as fast as possible during training camp. And if Mayweather's speed starts to take over, he says Cotto should "keep up with the pace of Mayweather, round by round, and stay close to him" at all times.
Cotto's record at 154 is not the best and not the worst, says Trinidad.
"Cotto became a champion there, but it was against a boxer who wasn't of the best quality. We know that Yuri Foreman was not a solid champion, and we already know he was slightly injured in his knee, but yes, [Cotto] became champion, and after that he fought with [Ricardo] Mayorga who came back from a long layoff," Trinidad said.
