New York, NY - It seems like the fight between Keith Thurman (26-0, 22KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-2, 16KOs) has been set for almost a year or so. The fight was originally scheduled to take place in March is now taking place tomorrow. Thurman knows what lies ahead of him, a path to greatness.
“I never had a day job in my life, I was bread for this to be great,” Thurman told BoxingScene.com. “Shawn Porter Is a world class fighter but Keith Thurman is that next level fighter.”
Thurman puts a heavy emphasis on the fact that the best need to fight the best and that the notion of protecting the zero in the loss column has to be thrown out the window.
“It’s extremely important,” Thurman said. “What people need to do is stop trying to be a Mayweather. I think protecting your record is old. It’s time for the best to fight the best. True fight fans respect great fighters losing to another great fighter. When you lose to a great fighter, you keep that value and people are going to remember and you’re going to come back. I want to know how good I am. Am I the number 1 fighter, Am I the number 5.”
Thurman sees the welterweight division as his path to greatness.
“Al Haymon has a plethora of welterweights in his stable so there’s no reason the fights can’t happen. Danny Garcia may not want to fight me this year but I can’t see how he can’t fight me next year. I’m open. I’m always interested in the next proposal. What comes after the first name I hear? I’m not too sure about what does happen in my future. I don’t see many fights that can’t be made outside maybe a Timothy Bradley. There are better fights out there than Timothy Bradley but I’d definitely fight him if he was the fight presented. At the end of the day, I want to show how great Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman.”
Sporting an Ali shirt in typical Ali fashion, Thurman ended by saying, “I’m going to show you how great I am, Keith One Time Thurman, 26-0, 22 Knockouts.”
