27-year-old WBA welterweight champion Keith "One Time" Thurman (26-0) is in the prime of his career and believes that the welterweight division is brimming with talent. On June 25th he faces former champion Shawn Porter (26-1) in what he hopes is the next step towards taking over the division.
With the retirement of former pound-for-pound Floyd Mayweather and 8-division champion Manny Pacquiao, Thurman feels the division is wide open. He believes that all of the young fighters are willing to face each other to prove who is the best welterweight.
"I would love to see an undisputed champion at 147 and then allow him to relinquish the belts back. All but maybe one of them. Whichever one he wants to hold onto the most. I would like to see it. We haven't seen it in a long time in history. We got a lot of guys who are young, strong, and pretty much willing to fight everybody. I believe in the near future you might get a unified title match," Thurman told BoxingScene.com.
Should all go well against Porter, Thurman said that he has his sights set on taking the green belt away from Danny Garcia.
"Especially because after this, with a tremendous victory over Shawn Porter, I am definitely going to be gunning after Danny Garcia. I would love to have my hands on that WBC," Thurman revealed.
When asked if a fight against Garcia is bigger than facing the winner of the upcoming IBF/WBO unification bout between Kell Brook and Jessie Vargas, Thurman reasoned, "If we were to do the fight in the U.S. then yes it would be the biggest but if we were to do the fight in the UK then the Kell fight would be just as big or bigger. Like I said, we have too many undefeated champions right now and we are just going to have to try to get one of the two. That is all that matters in my opinion."
