Two weeks ago BoxingScene.com first reported that a fight between former two division champion Devon Alexander and rugged veteran Jesus Soto Karass had been finalized and that it would take place on either June 21st in Carson, Calif. or on July 121th in Las Vegas.
This week Golden Boy Promotions officially announced that the fight would take place on June 21st at the Stubhub Center in Carson as part of a tripleheader that will be headlined by Robert Guerrero's return bout against Yoshihiro Kamegai. The fight will be Guerrero's first since his May, 2013 loss to Floyd Mayweather. Gary Russell Jr. will face Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant WBO featherweight title to round the tripleheader that will be broadcast on Showtime.
BoxingScene.com caught up with Alexander's manager and trainer Kevin Cunningham who said that his fighter must bring his "A" game to defeat the relentless Soto Karass who scored two upset victories last year.
"Soto Karass is a very tough veteran. He KO'd (Andre) Berto and had (Keith) Thurman hurt early in his last fight so Devon has to be focused and on point in this fight," said Cunningham.
Last month Alexander called out Guerrero and had hoped to face him before his fight against Soto Karass had been finalized. With Alexander and Guerrero on the same card, Cunningham feels that the two fighters could be on a collision course to meet in the ring provided they both win their next fights.
"This is a good fight and a good card. It potentially could set up a showdown between Devon and Guerrero later this year," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
