LOS ANGELES --- Chris Arreola is trying become the first Mexican to win a heavyweight world title when he faces Bermane Stiverne in a rematch for the vacant WBC heavyweight belt on Saturday at USC Galen Center on ESPN, but he isn't the only one trying to make history.
Stiverne, who has made his home in Las Vegas for the past 10 years, is trying to become the first Haitian to win a heavyweight championship in boxing history.
"To me, to become the first Haitian means a lot to me, especially where I come from," Stiverne said. "I come from nothing. When I say nothing, I mean nothing. For me to be here, to me it's a great accomplishment. California gets a lot of Mexicans, so they come out and support their fighters. I'm excited. My side, the Haitians, are going to support me also."
Stiverne said this fight means everything to him.
"I want this title more than Chris want it," Stiverne said. "Chris is a joke. Chris is not serious. He's never been serious in his career. I don't think he's serious at all. I'm a guy that's very disciplined. I don't need babysitters, because I want it. I mean, I showed it my whole career. I've been waiting for something like this. Chris isn't a man with discipline so to speak, partying and drinking and all that."
