Heavyweight prospect Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell of Brandywine, MD., will pursue his 19th straight win and his 15th knockout on Saturday against southpaw journeyman Charles Davis on the Golden Boy Promotions under card to the HBO televised main event featuring Mexico's 20-year-old Saul Alvarez against England's Mathew Hatton for the WBC's junior middleweight belt at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
The 28-year-old, 6-foot-2 Mitchell (20-0-1, 14 knockouts) is coming off of December's fifth round stoppage of 35-year-old Taurus "The Bull" Sykes (25-7-1, seven KOs), a win that secured his fifth straight knockout and his seventh in his past eight bouts.
"I'm fighting another 10 rounder. This will be my second time. If I go 10 rounds, you know, this will be the first time," said Mitchell, who, in disposing of Sykes, eliminated a man who has gone the 10-round distance in an June, 2007 loss to former world champion Hasim Rahman.
"Record-wise, it would be accurate to say that Taurus Sykes was my toughest opponent," said Mitchell. "He was a guy who went the distance with Hasim Rahman and who had beaten Friday Ahunanya. He was definitely my toughest opponent, record-wise."
In the 39-year-old Davis (19-21-3, four KOs), Mitchell realizes that he is taking a risk in looking bad, this, due to the fact that he will be facing a fighter who is 0-4-1 in his past five bouts, having been stopped twice during that time.
Davis has been stopped five times during his career and is coming off of a Jan. 22, eight-round draw with former contender, Monte Barrett.
"I'm looking to obviously win. His record is 19-21, so a lot of people might look at that and say that I'm not fighting anybody. But I don't look at that. In his 21 losses, I think that he's only been stopped I believe five times," said Mitchell.
"He's been in there with quality opposition and tends to go the distance and make his opponents look bad," said Mitchell. "That's one of my biggest motivations is to go out there, look good, and to keep this ship moving. I want to win, but I want to look good winning."
