Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, expects a sold-out crowd of 14,000 fans on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas - where Mexican junior middleweights Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo will go to war over twelve rounds. Canelo-Angulo headlines a Showtime Pay-Per-View event.
Canelo's drawing power has continued to hold strong, despite suffering a disappointing twelve round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September at the same venue.
Mayweather-Canelo was the richest fight in boxing history, with a buyrate of 2.2 million and $150 million in PPV revenue. The fight reportedly grossed over $200 million through the various revenue streams.
"It's going to be a sellout. We had it scaled for 14,000, because the other two thousand [seats], that are used for a Mayweather fight, the bleacher pack - is about $70,000 or $75,000. And those are $50 dollar seats and there are not enough $50 dollar seats to justify spending $75,000. That's why we are going to have a capacity of 14,000. It's going to be sold out, no question about it. We have maybe a couple hundred tickets left if you add all of the categories together. I have to talk to [MGM President of Entertainment and Sports] Richard Sturm and hopefully we can open up a few closed circuit locations at the MGM as well," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
