If there is one thing that the two-time world champion Orlando "Siri" Salido knows about boxing, is that nothing comes easy, especially for him. Everything that he has achieved in boxing he has earned the hard way and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I learned to appreciate what I have and I will never take an opponent lightly or disrespect them like so many other boxers who make plans for other fights without having even fought the one that’s in front of them,” said Salido, who is very close to landing a fight against the WBC Super featherweight champion Francisco “Bandido” Vargas.
“If I was Rocky Martinez I would be thinking only about his fight against Miguel Berchelt and stop making plans to fight Vargas who already has a partner for June 4. Martinez will be facing a young hungry lion in his hometown and Rocky won’t have the referee and judges to bail him out in Merida,” said Salido.
Salido and Martinez engaged in two terrific fights in 2015, both fight of the year type wars, that resulted in a win for Martinez in Puerto Rico and the other one was a draw in Las Vegas, a fight most everyone felt the Mexican warrior had won handily.
“I remember when Juanma Lopez had big plans before fighting me the first time, where did those plans go? – Martinez better be ready for a war against Berchelt, a Mexican like me and he will leave it all in the ring just like me,” added Salido.
“But if he wants to see a real fight between real warriors, I invite him to go the Stubhub Center in Carson, California on June 4 and enjoy a fight between a real champion Francisco Vargas and myself and he will see what a fight of the year looks and sounds like,” said Salido.
Salido a former world champion at 126 and 130 pounds has been in tremendous fights throughout his career and is looking forward to facing Francisco Vargas, an undefeated world champion from Mexico City who won the title in November of last year by stopping Takashi Miura in what many felt was the fight of year in 2015.
“I believe that Salido-Vargas will give the Morales-Barrera and Marquez-Vazquez fights a run for their money. It should be a great action fight that might also rival the great Corrales-Castillo first fight that is considered by many the best fight in the last 15 years,” said Sean Gibbons, advisor to Salido.
Salido who is in Phoenix, Arizona will re-open his training camp in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico next month for his fight against Vargas.
