On March 5th Sadam Ali (22-0) and Jessie Vargas (26-1) will battle for the vacant WBO welterweight title at the DC Armory in Washington DC. The fight will be part of a HBO televised doubleheader with a heavyweight clash between WBA "regular" champion Luis Ortiz and Tony Thompson serving as the main event.
The 2008 U.S. Olympian believes that a victory over Vargas will lead him to bigger fights and elevate him to the elite level where he feels he belongs.
"I definitely feel that this would lead to bigger fights. Why not? I would have the WBO title," said Ali. "More people will know me better and will have seen me more. Hopefully they don't say that I haven't fought anyone which they probably would and hopefully everybody sees that I am meant to be on that elite level and (in turn) get good fights."
Ali said that he is ready for any of the top fighters in the welterweight division. Whether it is the Pacquiao-Bradley winner, Kell Brook, or any other top welterweight, Ali just wants to get in the ring with them.
"I don't have any (particular) names. I just want to win the fight and get big fights. At the end of the day that is what I want. (Pacquiao-Bradley 3) is a huge fight so why not? That is the type of fight to get me to where I want to be. Whatever God has planned for me I am happy with," Ali told BoxingScene.com.
Why stopping short of predicting how we would defeat Vargas, Ali said that boxing fans can expect to see his whole arsenal on display.
"Expect fast punches and power and great movement. Expect everything in the ring. Expect something exciting. Expect something different and not what just any fighter will do. I plan on doing something different," Ali revealed.
