Taking a break from dismissing rumored fights, World flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez is on course for his May 16 title defense versus Edgar Sosa in Inglewood, California.
The unbeaten wunderkind from Nicaragua tipped the scales at 120.5 lbs. for his 30-day check-in weight, a prerequisite for all fights sanctioned by the World Boxing Council (WBC). Fighters participating in WBC events must weigh no more than 10% above their contracted weight at the 30-day mark, and no more than 5% over the limit at seven days.
Gonzalez (42-0, 36KOs) was well within the 123 lb. limit allowed for flyweights 30 days out.
The bout will mark the second defense of the flyweight championship he acquired with a 9th round knockout of Akira Yaegashi last September. Gonzalez previously served as an alphabet titlist at strawweight and junior flyweight.
His bout with Sosa will mark his HBO debut, serving as the chief support to Gennady Golovkin’s alphabet middleweight title defense versus Willie Monroe Jr.
