Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg have sold out the Manchester Arena and had to turn fans away from their public weigh-in due to intense demand yet Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 early) has had to make do with a spot on the undercard of Terry Flanagan versus Derry Mathews in Liverpool next month despite being the divison's consensus number one.
Rigondeaux meets British champion Jazza Dickens on March 12; he had harsh words for both Frampton and Quigg when talking about Saturday’s fight.
"I'm going over to England to win and then I'm going to beat Frampton and Quigg," he said when speaking to the Liverpool Echo.
"They are both cowards for finding ways to avoid the best in their division. I want to make a point that I'm here waiting for them; they know where to find me! I am a warrior and will fight anywhere. Fans should come to Liverpool to see what a true champion looks like."
The 35-year-old has failed to win over the general boxing public despite, or, more likely, because of, his silky skills. He fought for the lightly-regarded WBC International Silver title last time out (W10 over Drian Francisco), but he was on the undercard once again for that one, playing second fiddle to Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.
With time running away from him, “El Chacal” knows he needs to secure a meaningful fight this year and will hope to get the winner of Frampton-Quigg, providing of course the rematch option is not triggered following the bout.
