Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (31-9-1, 25KOs) is planning to make a big run in the middleweight division. The comeback will start on February 18th in Managua, Nicaragua, according to former champion Rosendo Alvarez.
The card is being promoted by Alvarez's promotional company, Bufalo Boxing Promotions. Mayorga has been out of the ring since August of 2015, when he was knocked out by Shane Mosley in the rematch which took place at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Mayorga is hoping to work his way into the rankings and secure a crack at one of the top guys, WBC, WBA, IBO, IBF champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, or WBA "regular" champion Daniel Jacobs. Golovkin and Jacobs are set to collide on March 18th.
Mayorga, 44-years-old, is even interested in matching his skills against UFC superstar Conor McGregor, who made an unexpected move last fall when he obtained a boxing license in the state of California.
Alvarez is hoping to help Mayorga with overcoming his demons outside of the ring. In recent years Mayorga has struggled with alcoholism and had more than his fair share of legal troubles. Mayorga reached out to Alvarez to get him back on track for a one final run.
"Mayorga asked us for support, for an opportunity. We weighed Mayorga and he came in at 173 pounds. He has been running and training in the gym. I'm going to be involved in the preparation of Ricardo, with his coach Luis Leon. We are going to put him in against a Mexican opponent at 160. We are going to help Mayorga's career. He is a human being, he has made mistakes,"Alvarez told Notifight/BoxingScene.com.
"We need to help Mayorga fight against his weaknesses, we want to motivate him, to know that there are people in the middle of everything who still have appreciation for him.Why are we going to trample on a man who raised the flag of our country?"
