A fight between Ruslan Provodnikov and Juan Manuel Marquez almost came to fruition earlier this year before falling apart at the negotiating table.
However, that doesn't mean the fight is dead in the water.
Marquez already took care of his end, defeating Mike Alvarado in May. Now, Provodnikov has to get past Chris Algieri on Saturday in the main event of "HBO's Boxing After Dark."
If all goes well as expected, the Siberian Rocky and the future Hall of Famer could be in each other's futures.
"Yes, to be honest with you, that was one of the fights that I really wanted, I thought it would be a great fight if I was in the ring together with Juan Manuel Marquez, but the fight didn't happen," Provodnikov told reports through his manager Vadim Kornilov last Saturday. "It's actually one of the reasons why I had a long break in between the fights is I was waiting for a bigger fight. I wanted to get some things done and get a little and then get a big fight, but it didn't happen for certain reasons."
"You know, (Algieri) is a big fight for me, and I need to get through that, and then I think anything can happen. In the future, we'll see how it plays out."
If fight fans are lucky, we'll get Marquez-Provodnikov before the Mexican legend hangs 'em up for good.
