Puerto Rico’s lone champion has been a staple in boxing for as long as we can remember in Miguel Cotto. With the island starving for another champion, any time there is a prospect that could fulfill world championship aspirations, it seems like certain prospects are pushed too fast and end up not reaching the pinnacle.
Prichard Colon falls into the category of highly touted Puerto Rican prospect with the right backing that could eventually end up being a world champion with the backing of Al Haymon. Colon made his New York debut in Brooklyn scoring a 9th round stoppage over Daniel Calazada.
Colon feels he has the right backing to get where he needs to be.
“It’s a blessing. I have the best team in my life,” Colon told BoxingScene.com. “The first seven fights were myself. Ever since I been with Al Haymon, things have gotten a lot easier. They take care of my fights and my opponents, its great. I’m always active. I’m real happy because everything’s been great.
For Colon, he knows the island is starving for a champion and he wanted to reiterate that his team will not rush him even if the lack of world champions in Puerto Rico may call for a speedy world title shot.
“We only got one champion in Miguel Cotto and they are looking at who’s going to take the mantle from Cotto,” stated Colon.”147 and 154 have always been the place where the best world champions come from Puerto Rico with Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. I think I’m the next Puerto Rican fighter in the area to be a superstar. They are taking my career in the right place. When it’s time for me to take the next step, they’ll make that decision. That’s why he’s my advisor and my job is to keep fighting.”
