Kenny Porter, the father/trainer/manager of Shawn Porter is on a hunt for WBA 'regular' welterweight champion Keith Thurman, who has been rumored to face Porter the past couple of months. Last weekend he was in Brooklyn for the Danny Jacobs-Peter Quillin fight hoping to get some clarification on this matchup.
But Porter says - "As of yet, no, we have not found Keith Thurman. It's one of those situations where it is the holidays and I'm sure Keith is enjoying himself. But as I said to Shawn the other day, we can eat Thanksgiving dinner after the fight, celebrate Christmas after the fight. It'll taste better and have bigger presents to open up after this fight.''
Word is that Thuman, who last fought on July 11th against Luis Collazo, is balking at the money being offered for this match-up. To which Porter says - "I'm sure Shawn will agree with me on this, if Keith is looking for more money - someone mentioned that to Shawn and Shawn said,'what more do you want? It's a big fight, you're gonna get paid' - but if it's going to take more money to get him to the table, hey, we'd be willing to supplement the fight with our purse to help him get to that ring if that's what it takes to find him."
Really?
"Yeah, absolutely,"confirmed Porter, who's son beat Adrien Broner on June 20th in his last outing. "If that's what it takes to fight Keith Thurman, yeah, we'd be willing to do that."
It truly is the holiday season.
"I guess you could say that,'' said Porter, who laughs when compared to Santa Claus.
"Yeah, we got a couple of presents and one of them is for Keith, if that's what it takes to get to the ring. Let's get that done. It's not a problem. His people can contact us. If that's what's stalling that fight we can get that done."
Both Porter and Thurman are under the PBC umbrella and advised by Al Haymon.
